I'm always encouraging people to take risks and see the kinds of shows and performers that they usually avoid. So, it was time to take my own advice and see a straight, white, middle-aged bloke doing stand up; it's been a while.
To be honest, I didn't reach that far out of my comfort zone and went to a small room and saw a vegan who got married on a beach near my place.
Carl Donnelly grew up working class in the UK and still tries to adhere to the rules of diversity, sticking it to the posh people and hating gentrification. He tries. But it's hard when he seems to have gentrified himself and become crystal-pendant wearing vegan who orders cold-drip coffee, spends far too much on sourdough bread* and married an Australian on Brighton Beach in Melbourne.
Yeah, he's turned. But he's still got a story about getting smashed at a stag do and tying to be as resilient as a 20-something.
Full of Beans is in its early days. There's material that'll go and some that has his audience wanting to hear far more about, like that about his current relationship with his family and his flat-earther brother.
